Winter 2014 trend: pastels

The wearing of pastels in womenswear is no longer seen as just a spring trend. In fact, pastels were a popular, albeit surprising, trend from the Fall/Winter 2013/14 collections. This trend was lauded by many fashion editors for its diverse array of beautiful candy colors. From coats to lace and satin to skirts, pastel is celebrated because it can suit any woman. Certain pastel colors favor cool-toned women, while others favor warm-toned women. This trend means it can be shown in editorials and all women can take part. The fashion trend of pastel will perk up anyone who is tired of the snow and cold this season!

Some women may not know what counts as pastel. Well, the designers proved that almost every color has a pastel counterpart. Consider the following:

  • baby blue
  • powder pink
  • mint green
  • lemon yellow
  • ice blue
  • blush pink
  • lavender

Surely there must be a color in the above list that you already have in your wardrobe! Do not be afraid to reach for something familiar in these tones, and just apply it to your wardrobe with a couple new items. Consider a cashmere cardigan, knife-pleat skirt, or coat to really make an fresh impact.

All publications have written about how to keep yourself from looking ridiculous in this trend. It is suggested that you create new, or refreshing color combinations. Some of these combinations are:

  • ice blue and silver
  • mint green and nude
  • powder pink and orange
  • lavender and white
  • baby blue and animal print
  • lemon yellow and mint green
  • blush pink and nude

You could also pair them with an animal print. Even wearing similar pastel shades monochromatically can give you a modern vibe. One of the best ways to execute this trend it to pair metallic accents. Retro-glam metallic jewelry, and coordinated handbag hardware and heels can really add polish. Wide-legged pants with a metallic pointed-toe heel or a pastel dress with a metallic evening sandal will keep you chic.

Any way that you style this look, you have the means to make it your own. Never be afraid to pick up some new-for-you items at one of the incredible consignment shops in our area. The treasures you come across there might be something you end up starting to wear as a trend item, and then one day it turns into the most treasured piece in your wardrobe.
