Winter 2014 trend: menswear inspired

The menswear trend for Fall/Winter 2013/14 was led predominantly by collections inspired by classic mens suiting. These collections utilized the fabrics commonly seen on bankers, in boardrooms, and law offices. Pinstripes, herringbone, plaid, houndstooth, and tweeds were all seen in the various womenswear collections. The fabrics and materials used create a vast array of chic options that will inspire you in your day-to-day dressing.

The first decision which must occur is whether or not the outfit is going to be deliberately masculine, or possibly play up feminine assets with menswear influence. Designers like Moschino, Yohji Yamamato, and Dsquared² presented looks that were incredibly masculine. Designers such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Proenza Schouler, Dries Van Noten, Marc Jacobs, and Saint Laurent added feminine touches to play down the masculinity. J.Crew and Tommy Hilfiger demonstrated a classic preppy look with menswear details for their Fall 2013 collections.

Different elements can add elegance to your look. Accessories such as oversized watches, sleek clutches, oxford booties, stiletto loafers, and simple jewelry soften up the menswear drama. Even simply adding a bold but classic top coat to your wardrobe can bring your seasonal wardrobe into the menswear trend. For some a hat might look costume-y, but if you enjoy wearing hats, a fedora or bowler could add a jaunty touch of menswear to any outfit. Review your accessories and see if there is an on-trend item you may have overlooked.

Some women are more comfortable in a pencil skirt and heels with the upper half covered up. A gorgeous, tailored suit jacket or blazer would bring on-trend interest to this styled outfit. A tailored pant in a fun pattern can add curves to an athletic frame. Switching out a suit jacket or blazer for a silk blouse or sweater can make the patterned, tailored pant work for any atmosphere. Lastly, one cannot fail with a classic shift dress in menswear inspired glen plaid or tweed.
