According to Mary Agnes Welch of the Winnipeg Free Press, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jocelyne Larocque dropped the puck in a ceremonial faceoff prior to the Winnipeg Jets' game against the Phoenix Coyotes in National Hockey League action at the MTS Centre on Thursday.

Larocque, a defenseman from St. Anne, Manitoba, won a gold medal for team Canada in women's hockey at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Larocque had a goal and an assist for two points in five games. Larocque's goal was Canada's first goal of the entire Olympic women's hockey tournament. It was the game winner in a 5-0 victory over Switzerland.

Larocque's assist meanwhile came on a goal by Brianne Jenner that pulled Canada within a goal of the United States in the gold medal game.

Heading into the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, there was some concern that the Canadian defense lacked experience on the international stage, but those concerns were insignificant, because as a unit the Canadian defense played very well.

The Jets defeated the Coyotes 3-2 on a shootout winner by Olli Jokinen.
