Last month I wrote an article about one of my favorite cupcake locations in Pasadena and this month I have chosen to write, yes another article on a cupcake store.
When Annette Starbuck of Goodie Girls recently opened her La Canada, California location, I had to drop in and sample the merchandise. Annette is adorable, cute and a great business woman who has achieved a lot in this ever-changing cupcake store business. With cupcake stores everywhere, one can only ask “can I survive” as cupcakes I believe has become a thing of the past. More cupcake stores are diversifying which I believe will only benefit them in the long run. Others may disagree with me and think that if they started with “cupcakes” they will continue with them as their number one product.
Being home once again to the 2013 Breeder’s Cupcake, Goodie Girls has definitely put its place on the map. The only issue I have is the consistency with their flavor profile and the actual taste of their frostings. I will tell you that in my book, they have hit a home run with their Strawberry Lemonade cupcake – the frosting is spot-on and the cake is delicate, moist and flavorful. In fact any cupcake I have tried with strawberry has been off the charts!
The other day I popped in to test an additional flavor and was very disappointed with their October flavor of the month – Caramel Apple. The cake was dry, with very little apple filling which didn’t remind me of a nice juicy apple – no spices, to speak of. The frosting tasted like it was all butter. To me the best part of a cupcake is eating both the frosting and the cake at the same time – I left most of the frosting behind. I felt there was no hint of Caramel at all.
Goodie Girls will survive I am sure of it but I feel they should pay more attention to consistency. Their design and decorations of their cupcakes is flawless. The store itself is charming and very girly girl with pink and white as their theme.
Goodie Girls has two locations – Glendale (415 E. Broadway, #100, Glendale, California, Phone: (818) 545-0434) and La Canada (637 W. Foothill Blvd., La Canada, California, Phone: (818) 790-7718).
