A lottery winner gave $40M to charity -- and that was all of his winnings. On Dec. 17, ABC News reported that a very generous man by the name of Tom Crist decided that charity would do better things with the lottery money that he won -- so he donated every last penny. Crist, from Calgary, Canada, wore a hat and sunglasses during his interview with the lottery.
"Back in May, [Crist] won $40 million but he didn't tell anyone about it -- not even his kids. Crist says he's going to donate every bit of it to charity," ABC News reports.
The lotto winner who gave $40M to charity explained that he didn't need the money. He says that he worked hard for much of his life and is at a good place where he can provide for himself and help his kids out in the future. His decision to give all of his winnings to cancer charities may have been swayed by his wife's battle, which she lost two years ago.
"As soon as I got that call, I knew where that money was going to go," Crist explained. "I did very well for myself. I've done enough that I can look after myself, my kids, so they can get looked after in the future. I don't really need that money," Crist explained.
The lottery winner's $40M charity donation is something unheard of -- especially because he isn't keeping a dime of those winnings. Talk about being generous! $40 million is the largest lottery win in Calgary.
