Winner $40M charity: Tom Crist, 64, is by no definition a greedy man. The Canadian lottery winner has made news this week for his generous donations to various charities in honor of his late wife who died of cancer a few years ago.
NBC Los Angeles reported Dec. 19 that Crist knew instantly that he wanted to give up his entire winnings to charity. In fact, he just wrote his first big check....$1.2 million to the Alberta Cancer Foundation....the medical center that treated his wife for cancer. This was his way of saying thank you to them and helping other patients fight cancer.
The $40M winner learned of his massive win when he was on a golf course in May. He was informed by a lottery official that he had the winning numbers for the game played (these were not tickets sold, but games paid for in advance of the drawings).
"I was speechless," said. "I really didn’t know what to say."
Crist is a retired executive of a large electrical company and felt he had earned enough money in his life that the $40M lottery win was not that important to him.
"I really don't need the money," he said.
It is definitely a "feel good" story to hear that a winner of $40M donated it to charity. Those kinds of gestures from even the wealthiest of lottery winners do not happen every day.
