For local Calgary wine stories – it’s as local as it gets!
Our own Mount Royal University celebrated its centennial in November 2010, and to commemorate 100 years of history and achievement, they partnered with Bounty Cellars Winery of Kelowna, British Columbia to produce an Alumni wine. The wine was called “Centennial” and was a Meritage blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The label depicted the 100 years celebration.
As Mount Royal transitioned from “College” to “University”, the wine transitioned too and a staff member on the University’s marketing team was tasked with updating the wine and designing a label that could compete with other bottles of wine found on liquor store shelves.
The result is "Coordinate" - two wines, one white and one red, with a simple but striking label that features the GPS coordinates of Mount Royal University –
N 51º 0’ 42” W 114º 7’ 53”
Not only does this wine provide the perfect talking point at any dinner table in Calgary and make a great and thoughtful gift, it creates a lasting legacy for future Calgarians as over $2 from every bottle ($25 from each case) sold goes to the Mount Royal University Alumni Association and is used for student scholarships and bursaries!
“Coordinate” has inspired a sense of pride in Mount Royal alumni as well as faculty and staff, who regularly purchase large quantities for functions and gifts for visitors and guests.
Mount Royal University “Coordinate” Pinot Gris $18.65 13.5% ABV
CSPC# 741286
“Coordinate” Pinot Gris is a crisp dry wine, with delicate flavours of pear and apricot. It has a lengthy dry finish of fruity green apple. This wine is ideal for salads and seafood dishes, but also with spicy food. We recently paired it at Calgary favourite “Downtownfood”, with togarashi seared Beef Tataki, served with jalepeno salsa, garlic chips, green onions, and yuzu.
Mount Royal University “Coordinate” Merlot $19.99 13.9% ABV
CSPC# 741285
“Coordinate” Merlot is a full bodied wine with aromas of black cherry. On the palate there are fine-grained tannins complementing earthy forest floor flavours, with hints of spice. This Merlot would pair well with charcuterie and well-flavoured sausage, slow-braised beef or lamb, and meat in a black peppercorn sauce.
