Journalisticly (probably not a word there...) speaking, we're aware we're not supposed to talk about ourselves, that we remove ourselves from our writing, that we write on our subject matter, not about personal experiences.
Going out on the proverbial limb here and breaking the above rule, I am delving into the topic of 'wine on the road' (and the drinking thereof). Experiencing a five week epic zig-zag cross-country road trip with my college boy son, and not wanting to hit the local bars every night, purchasing wines that will travel well has become a challenge.
First of all, as a Chardonnay girl from the get-go, white wines have proven to be not the best choices, as they simply must be kept and served cold. Bummer.
So, on to the reds. Travel-wise, we have kept the bottles- some open, some not, as near to the rental car's A.C. as possible. Shiraz's/Syrah's have risen to the top of the list. Best of the best so far:
- McWilliams Hanwood Estate- from Southeastern Australia, showing big fruit and chocolate on both the nose and palate.
- Penfold's Koonunga Hill Shiraz/Cabernet- also from Southeastern Australia, a 75/25 blend, smokey, spicy dark fruit.
- Shoofly Australian Shiraz- bright cherry and mocha, minty eucalyptus on the finish.
- Smoking Loon California Syrah- vibrant strawberry, rich coffee, and dark chocolate.
If your wine opener is confiscated by the TSA--as mine was, and has been many times, as it is or at least can be considered a weapon; the knife-part and all, there are many creative ways to open wine bottles without a corkscrew. Just be sure if you use a sharp, short-bladed knife, that if you push the cork in to the bottle it will likely splash up and on to the white pants you are of course wearing.,
All above wines come in around the $10. mark, and all travel well. This, spoken from direct experience.
