Wineries host Valentine events in North Carolina

What better way to spend a romantic weekend than a drive to a local winery to sample various vintages? Add a taste of chocolate, a B&B, and you have the makings of a perfect romantic getaway.

Within an easy drive of the NC cities of Charlotte, Greensboro and Winston-Salem, wineries sponsor fun events in honor of Valentine's Day. In fact they sponsor special events all year. Follow our links to discover what's being uncorked this weekend.

For the Love of Chocolate and Wine

Sunday, February 9, noon to 5 p.m.
Discover the special qualities of one of North Carolina's smallest AVAs, tucked into a protected valley in the Yadkin region. The five wineries are all just five miles apart and specialize in Italian and French varietals.For this pre-Valentine tour, each winery will pair one of its wines with a chocolate treat. Raffaldini, for instance, will offer a taste of red wine infused chocolate brownie.

2-5 p.m.
This vineyard in Troutman, just north of Lake Norman, is the first in Iredell County. The Valentine event features free samples of chocolate treats. Wine tastings ($5, or $7 with souvenir glass) and wines by the glass or bottle available.

7 - 11 p.m.
The Norden family grows eight varieties of muscadine, including a clone from the Mother Vine in Manteo, at this vineyard near Monroe. The Valentine's party is catered by Hickory Tavern, with a hot appetizer spread and dessert bar, plus acoustic music by singer Shelby Rummage.
$20, includes one glass of wine

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Special wine tastings, chocolate samples, sparkling wine bar, and discount prize wheel make Valentine's weekend fun. The on-site Harvest Grill will serve a special Valentine menu by reservation (336-366-3590). Shelton is conveniently located off I-77 at exit 93.
$5 for regular tour & tasting; $20 for Reserve Tour & Tasting (with reservation)

4th Annual Wine and Music Valentines Event
Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery
Saturday, February 15
6:30 - 10 p.m.
Enjoy live music by Aubrey Shamel and dinner catered by Heaven's Scent at this Valentine event at a winery near Elkin.
$35 per person includes one glass of wine

Peace & Love Valentine's Party
Rocky River Vineyards
Saturday, February 15
6 - 10 p.m.
Annual event includes entertainment and a 3-course catered dinner from 200 North Restaurant. This winery is located near the Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site just east of Charlotte.
$40 per person, includes first glass of wine.

Wine & Chocolate Tasting
Native Vines Winery
Saturday, Feb. 15
Enjoy fine wines paired with chocolates, desserts, fruits and a chocolate fountain on Saturday. On Valentine's Day, couples get BOGO prices on tastings (normally $10 per person). This winery, located near Lexington, NC, claims to be the first in the country owned by a Native American.
Saturday tasting: $15/per person $25/per couple

Make The Cold Season A Little Warmer Romantic Dinner

6 p.m.
Uwharrie's annual Cellar Club dinner series gets underway with a gourmet meal featuring grilled NY strip steak topped with a chocolate merlot sauce, plus salad, sides and a complimentary bottle of wine for Cellar Club members. Dessert is red velvet cake with a glass of the vineyard's new Red Velvet wine. Singer Greg Lilley entertains with original tunes and covers of hits by The Eagles and Paul Simon. Membership in the Cellar Club is free.
$50 per couple, reservations required by Feb. 10.

Amore! The Language of Love
Raffaldini Vineyards
Sunday, February 16
Two sessions: 1pm & 3pm
Frank Ancona, the Ambassador of the Triad Friends of Italy, will share the most important Italian conversational phrases you'll need when traveling in Italy. Raffaldini, located just off I-40, is North Carolina's premier producer of chianti wines.
Free, but reservations are required.
