The great debate continues as to whether it is better to be single or in a relationship for Valentine’s Day. Contrary to popular belief, being coupled up doesn’t guarantee that you’re in for a memorable day of love, hearts and gazing into your significant other’s eyes. And, just because you’re single, it doesn’t mean you have to be bitter, hateful and feeding yourself large quantities of Ben & Jerry’s (as fun as that is). So maybe neither is better than the other when you decide to celebrate love for what it is.
After a week full of emails promising the perfect V-day plan, emails that included: restaurant ‘offers’ of dinners for two starting at $50 per person, $150 spa packages and $60 to learn how to cook with your sweetie; all lovely, yet truly unnecessary ideas and emails for ‘Single Awareness Day’ and “how not to be bitter for Valentine’s Day”, I think, if you are one that wishes to celebrate this hyped-up holiday without breaking the bank or feeling like a love outcast for this day that is red, pink, and crazed allover, then I have one word for you: wine.
Wine is the solution to all V-day problems. It’s tasty, it doesn’t discriminate due to relationship status, and in many cases it’s not more than $5.00. Whether you feel like being amorous with your one and only or toasting your friends for being single and happy, wine is the way to go.
Fortunately, for we San Diegans, there is wine aplenty that can flow this 14th should you need a valentine drink. Although, they’re not really wine specials to celebrate Cupid madness; they’re wine specials that celebrate the appreciation for the simple happiness in life a.k.a. Monday happy hours.
Mix it Up Mondays at The Wine Pub offers wine tastings from 5-7 p.m. For $5, you get 5 tastings of your choosing from their large menu selection of wines.
Wine Steals, which has multiple San Diego locations, offers 8 different glasses of wine for $4 from 4-7p.m. and $2 slices of pizza.
or
$3 house wines are available at Babycakes from 5-8p.m. which also gives you the option of a variety of delicious cupcakes. Mmm, cupcakes...
But, if going out doesn’t intrigue you, just pick up a five dollar bottle of wine from your local Vons and toast the love you have in your life, no matter what your relationship status may be. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a day to go overboard, but it doesn’t have to be a day to dread either. And as far as the great (being single vs. relationship for V-day) debate, what better way to engage in such a conversation than over a glass (or bottle) of wine.
