”The 2012’s are just coming into market and I wasn’t sure what I would have to choose from. My purpose was to select the best 2012’s now available so you could get an early view of this much heralded vintage. As it turns out there were quite a few to contemplate. I’ve learned over the years that you can’t make judgements about a vintage by the early releases but you can certainly get an idea of the general style. I remember out of the box I decided that 2011 was the worst vintage

“I had tasted in my 20 years of up close and personal experience with Oregon Pinot since opening the shop. Mistake! Along came the Arterbery Maresh single vineyards, Thomas, all of the Cameron wines etc. These wines have the potential to develop into some stunning wines but the style of the vintage dictates that you hold tight and lay them down in a cool, quite space.

“2012 is a completely different animal. Again, while, like I said, I’m not making any final judgments until the “big boys” are released, for sure, it’s a vintage of seductive, fleshed out, velvety Pinots that you could have enjoyed straight from the barrel. I’m really pleased to include the one 2011 in this flight…..the Cameron Arley’s Leap, which is from a slice of Abbey Ridge Vineyard named after the vineyard dog. I think John Paul (Cameron) made some of the best 2011’s and it will be educational to compare it to all of these 2012’s.

“One of the great things that wine offers over many other beverages is the vintage. Each one has its own characteristics. 2011 and 2012 are perfect examples. With the 2012’s you are offered the option to drink delicious Pinots early on while you wait on vintages like 2011, 2010 and 2008. That, to me, is one of the things that makes the study of fine wines so enjoyable.
