A Lake effect snow warning is in effect for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties.
Arctic air will spread across the region today on gusty westerly winds. The winds could gust in excess of 45 mph at times today with biting wind chills.
Scattered snow showers are likely across the entire area, but the heaviest and most persistent snow showers will be across the primary snow belt east of Cleveland. Most areas will pick up light accumulations today, but heavier amounts are possible across the snow belt. Highs today will be in the upper 20s this morning, then temperatures will fall a few degrees this afternoon.
Lake effect snow will increase in intensity through this evening as a well aligned westerly flow will likely support a single intense band across the primary snow belt. Late this evening, a weak trough of low pressure will move southward across the area, and this will cause the winds to shift to the northwest. The heavier snows across the primary snow belt could drift southward into the secondary snow belt overnight. Significant accumulations are possible where squalls persist.
Outside of the snow belt areas, scattered snow showers and flurries are expected with light accumulations possible. Lows tonight will fall to the low to mid teens and it will remain breezy with wind chills below zero.
Friday will be blustery and cold with lake effect snow showers and squalls continuing. Additional accumulations are likely across the snow belt. Highs will reach the upper teens with wind chills below zero.
A clipper will move into the Great Lakes late Friday or Friday night. This will cause the winds across our area to shift to the southwest, pushing the lake effect snow back up the lake shore toward Ashtabula county. The remainder of the area should see a break in the snow shower activity. Lows Friday night will fall to around 10 degrees.
Snow associated with the clipper will spread across the area on Saturday. Highs on Saturday will reach the low to mid 20s. The snow will likely persist into Saturday night or early Sunday. This looks like mainly a light snowfall for much of the region with most locations picking up 1 to 3 inches of new snow.
On Sunday, a northwesterly flow behind the departing clipper will produce another period of lake effect snow across the area. Highs will be in the mid 20s.
