Many of us enjoy celebrating Mother's Day in fancy hotels and restaurants, which means we're in luck tomorrow.
New Orleans boasts numerous choices, such as at Windsor Court hotel, just south of the French Quarter, which is offering some notable Mom draws.
Starting with Le Salon, which will kick off the festivities with a delightful Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea. Generations of mothers, grandmothers, daughters, and granddaughters as well as dads, brothers and, you get the idea, can gather to celebrate with Windsor Court’s special Mother’s Day menu.
Organizers tell me that you'll be toasting "with a welcoming cocktail" before choosing from fine loose-leaf teas, paired with English tea sandwiches and seasonal scones with clotted cream. Decadent desserts masterfully created by Pastry Chef Shun Li, including miniature cakes, tartlets, chocolate covered strawberries, and truffles round out the menu, while live harp and piano accompaniment augments the experience.
Every mother will leave with a special parting gift, too. Seatings are available tomorrow, May 11 at 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. & 4:30 p.m. Prices are $37 per person, plus tax and gratuity. For reservations, call 504-596-4773 or visit www.grillroomneworleans.com/le-salon. The Windsor Court is located at 300 Gravier Street, New Orleans; main no. is 504-523-6000.
Moreover, Windsor's Grill Room will celebrate with a special four-course Mother’s Day brunch including two dishes created by Southern Living: Breakfast in a Skillet with Housemade Pork Sausage, Biscuit Crumble, and Poached Eggs, or the delectable Lemon-Mascarpone Icebox Tart with Fresh Fruit Compote. And again, every leading lady will leave with a gift from Southern Living. Start licking your chops at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Sunday May 11. Feeding stops around 2:30. Prices are higher than for the tea, at $80 plus tax and tip. For rezzies call: 504-522-1992 or visit www.grillroomneworleans.com.
But your mom's special day won't stop with the last swallow of her Green Strawberry Gazpacho and Crawfish Bisque. No, she's going to slip into some real pampering, N'awlins style:
•The Spa at Windsor Court is offering a host of "wow"-enducing mama packages. What better way to celebrate the woman who labored to bring you into this world than by treating her to an afternoon of pampering? These packages will be available for weekend appointments or if you buy a gift card. Contact the spa at 504-596-4736 for more information regarding:
- WOW (MOM upside down) Reigning Light Facial, a "transformational skincare treatment" featuring LED therapy, which they tell me is "known for its ability speed up your skin's healing process."
- And the WOW (MOM upside down) Manicure and Pedicure, which begins with shaping the nails, soaking feet and hands, cuticle care and exfoliation (love that exfoliation!). Nails then get a color of one's choice.
(Note: You won't have to turn Mom upside down for these; they meant the letters spell WOW when MOM is turned...well, you get it.)
For those of you who just want to celebrate the day in other ways, perhaps you don't really like your mom (or vice-versa), then by all means check out this glorious hotel's non-mommish features. After all, they are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year!
Spring rates start at just $265 to live like a king or queen for a couple of days. Singletons or otherwise momless folk, hit the cocktail bar. Or heck, bring Mom along if brunch isn't really her style.
After a swim in the luxurious rooftop pool, towel off and see the city. Everyone goes to the Quarter, but I recommend a streetcar ride up to the Garden District, followed by a walk around the Tulane campus. And for supper, do consider this examiner's favorite haunt, VooDoo BBQ.
Happy Mother's Day, y'all.
