Windshield Damage and Insurance

See also

When an accident or natural disaster damages your windshield, it is only natural to panic. Driving with a damaged windshield can be extremely dangerous, and windshields are known for being expensive to replace on your own. Fortunately, some types of auto insurance cover windshield repairs.
In order to determine if your insurance policy covers windshield repairs, the easiest thing to do is contact your insurance company. In many cases, however, windshield repair coverage is only available to people who have comprehensive coverage.
People with very basic policies are usually only covered for the damage they cause to another vehicle during an accident in which they are at fault. If you have very basic coverage, this means that after an accident your insurance may pay to replace the other driver’s windshield, but not yours. People with basic auto insurance typically have to pay for repairs to their vehicle out of their own pocket.
Collision coverage pays for any damage to your vehicle and the vehicle of the other driver in the event that you are at fault during an accident. This means that if you cause an accident, your insurance company will provide funds to replace both your windshield and that of the other driver (providing, of course, that both windshields were damaged). Collision coverage only covers damage that takes places during an auto accident. It does not cover damage from natural disasters or vandalism.
In order to have any type of damage to your windshield covered by your insurance policy, you must have comprehensive coverage. While this is the most expensive type of auto insurance, it covers practically anything that can happen to a vehicle. Damage to a windshield that is caused by a hail storm, rock chip, road debris, or even an act of vandalism by an unknown person is covered by comprehensive insurance coverage.
Of course, no matter what type of insurance you have, you will have to pay your deductible out of pocket. This is why it is important to make sure your car insurance deductible is set to a comfortable level that you can afford.
No matter who is paying to repair the damage to your car, it is important to pick a reputable shop to work on your car. A windshield is one of the most important safety features on a car, and it is critically important that a new windshield be installed well in order for it to be safe.
