The Wilton Giant Cupcake Pan is the newest fad in cake decorating. The pan allows you to divide your batter into two parts which you assemble after baking into an 8 by 8 inch cupcake-shaped cake.

The pan is well-made from cast aluminum with a non-stick interior. You will be directed to both grease and flour the inside of each of the baking molds which is a little tricky because one is fluted and the other has a swirly design inside. The easiest thing to do is to use spray oil and dump in two generous scoops of flour. Tip and shake the pan around until it is thoroughly coated and the cake should remove easily when baked.

The directions call for one box of cake mix, divided into each side up to a fill line. The tops of each half will rise as they bake and end up being rounded. You will have to slice them both flat in order to assemble the cupcake by tipping the cupcake top over onto the cupcake bottom with frosting in between. Some user-reviews suggest putting the larger half of the batter into the oven first for about ten minutes before adding the batter to the slightly smaller half, but the directions do not specifically call for this so you should feel free to experiment.

If you frost the top only of the cupcake, you will end up with very tall slices and not so much frosting, so plan according to your guests needs. If you're having children at your party it may be a good idea to bake regular size cupcakes as well that they can handle more easily.

Summary

The giant cupcake is a fun novelty.  The pan is well-made and cleans easily. Consider using the cupcake shape for as a basis for other themed cakes. You could frost it like a tropical hut or a carousel, for instance, or maybe you could shave it into a mushroom for a Super Mario party cake.
