As Bruce Willis opens up another installment of his "Die Hard" franchise, there is no reason not to have this weekend be Valentine's Day at the box office.
Three movies opens today (Feb. 14), including the Willis film, and it makes for a long weekend with box office numbers flying all over. Monday is also a holiday in the states, so hang tight, it may be a bumpy ride.
Opens Feb. 14
1. "A Good Day to Die Hard"- 3,553 theaters
2. "Safe Haven" - 3,223 theaters
3. "Beautiful Creatures" - 2,950 theaters
Perhaps Willis and his other team from "Armageddon" will head to that asteroid that will pas by earth on Feb.15. A follow-up may be needed. Oh, back to the real box office now. It would not be a surprise is those who love the "Twilight" series head o theaters to boost "Beautiful Creatures."
The fate of "A Good Day to Die Hard" is up to the audience and fans. Since it is a franchise film, it may serve him better than the latest from Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger dished them. Love is in the air, they hope with Julianne Hough, Josh Duhamel in Safe haven" and then "Creatures" starring a big cast of characters including Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Thomas Mann and Emma Thompson.
Feb. 15 releases
1. "Escape From Planet Earth" - 3,288 theaters
2. "No" - Limited theaters
Taking a look at those theater counts, it will be crowded, so if one cannot get into one film, hop into another one. Let's see where last week's winner, "Identity Thief" falls, or not. If that film has another solid weekend, it will be an eye-opener. The animated "Escape from Planet Earth" is gobbling up many theaters even after those Wednesday openers, so it will be crowded.
