The historic Williamsville Water Mill is about to get some new neighbors.
It was announced on Monday that Michael Shatzel, who already has three restaurants in Buffalo, has leased a 1,482-square-foot space at 78 Spring Street in the Village of Williamsville where he will create a craft beer bar. Shatzel owns Cole’s and Blue Monk restaurants in the Elmwood Village neighborhood and Liberty Hound on the waterfront in Buffalo.
He and business partner Dino DeBell bought five buildings on Allen Street in Buffalo earlier this year, including the former Quaker Bonnet Eatery at 175 Allen, as well as a former Quaker meeting house, an adjacent wooden house, a carriage house and a storage garage. They have announced plans to convert the former restaurant into a burger restaurant.
At 5590 Main Street in Williamsville, Bryan and Tara Bryndle have signed a lease for the recently-vacated Coffee Culture location, where they will open an oyster bar. The leasing action was a quick one, since the coffee shop closed just last Wednesday. The couple owns the Tabree Restaurant in Snyder.
The Williamsville Water Mill complex is a historic listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. It originally was built as a sawmill in 1801, was enlarged in 1827, and operated until 1903. Also on the site was the Water-Lime Works and Williamsville Cement Company mill, the latter eventually converted to be a gristmill. After 1908, the mills were used for apple cider production. It is one of the few surviving examples of a water-powered seat of local industry in Western New York.
Sweet Jenny's, which makes and sells chocolates and ice cream, already does business in the complex.
