William Shatner announced as Calgary Stampede's parade marshal via YouTube

William Shatner was announced as the 2014 Calgary Stampede's parade marshal in a YouTube video and on Twitter yesterday. The funny Canadian actor and avid horseman is best known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in science fiction TV series Star Trek and as attorney Denny Crane in TV series The Practice and its spin-off Boston Legal. The Calgary Stampede also announced Calgary based speed skaters Gilmore Junio and Denny Morrison as honorary Marshals "in recognition of their unique story of Olympic camaraderie earlier this year at Sochi."

The YouTube video announcement is humorous and playful, no doubt in an attempt to attract younger viewers and it is a good way to provide some useable footage for the TV news stations to use instead of the old boring and formal announcement.

P.S. It was fun to see Shatner tweeted, "Born in Calgary... Hmmm... Has a nice ring to it... ;-) @calgarystampede"

P.P.S. This reporter had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Dr. Shatner and his wife Elizabeth Martin when he received the Banff World Television Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. Here is a YouTube video of Shatner's heartwarming acceptance speech. You can also watch an insightful chat of Shatner with "The Big Bang Theory" creator Bill Prady at Banff World Television Festival in June 2010.
