The "Church of The Wild Ones" tour will be open for worship this Friday evening, January 25th, at Best Buy Theater on Times Square. William Control will share his message and music as he opens for headliners, Black Veil Brides.
Pairing William with Black Veil is a perfect match starting on a personal level. William lent his voice to BVB's new album "Wretched and Divine" as the character F.E.A.R. I got to talk to William and asked how this collaboration came about. He explained that he and Andy Biersack, frontman and founder of Black Veil, have been friends since the very early days of the "Brides". He's also toured with the band previously in 2010. He said the he really enjoyed the album project with BVB and would definitely do more voice-overs if the opportunities arose.
"Silentium Amoris" is Control's newest record. Released in April of 2012, this is the third U.S. tour for the album. Many of the song titles and lyrics have Christian references and imagery, albeit from the darker side, so it should lend itself well to the tour's church theme. The melodic electronica combined with William's gritty baritone will definitely be a great lead-in to BVB's set. He is another artist who successfully finds the beauty in dark places.
Speaking of William Control's creativity, we talked about the fact that he is involved in just about every aspect of the recording process. He is a song writer, instrumental musician, band member, label owner and producer. He agreed that being able to do everything from start to finish results in a product that he is happy with. In his own words, "I am a fan of the process of creating something from nothing. I revel in the fact that I can get together with a group of guys and make something that sounds pleasing and that you want to sing along with."
This led me into my three favorite questions to artists. The first; what arts does he create in? Besides the ones previously mentioned, William is a painter and a poet. I also asked if he has formal training in any arts. "No. I'm completely self-taught." Experience is the best teacher in his book. The next question; What arts does he go to for relaxation and/or inspiration. William enjoys a good book and is a big fan of films. Finally; "what art do you wish you could create in that you can't? He'd like to be able to sew. One other question that I asked just out of curiosity was William's musical guilty pleasure? Surprisingly and yet not, his answer was show tunes.
Discussion turned to the current state of the industry, especially for alternative and independent musicians. Like so many others, Control says that the business changes from minute to minute, a lot of it due to the ever changing technology. Between picking the right social network, blogging or fundraising site everyone is feeling their way. Eventually it will sort itself out but in the meantime, hopefully you're an artist that can cater to enough people to grow a fanbase and keep them interested.
