Will you be my Valentine?

Why should we celebrate our love for each other and for our children just once a year?  This fun craft project will allow you to set aside a special moment for one another every month for an entire year.

Here is what you will need for 12 months of easy DIY scratch-off Valentine's:

  • Blank monthly Valentine's notes (printable version here)
  • Coordinating scrapbook paper
  • Silver metallic acrylic paint
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Clear contact paper

Here is how to complete the project:

Cut out the cards and write a monthly activity on each one inside of the heart.  Because this is a fun project to do for either your children or a special adult in your life, you could easily make a two sets; one that is kid friendly and one that is adult friendly.

If you have more than one child, make a seperate set for each little one.  Be sure to put the activities in different orders so their month's activity is just for them.  Choose activities that are free or fairly low-cost and not too complicated for you to do.  Here is a sample 12 months of activities:

  • Mommy will read a chapter book at bedtime
  • Go roller-skating or ice-skating
  • Go out and have breakfast at a restaurant
  • Go to a museum
  • Go to an amusement park
  • Go for a long bike ride
  • Play mini-golf
  • Go on a hike
  • Go to the movies
  • Go out and have dessert at a restaurant
  • Have a craft night or game night
  • Free choice (have the person choose the activity for that month)

Next, attach your Valentine's to some pretty paper. (This is optional as you could always print your valentines on cardstock instead, but the different patterns will help you keep the cards going to the right person if you've made more than one set.  Plus, it just looks pretty)

Cover the fronts of your cards with contact paper.  Just peel off the paper backing, set the cards face down, and then cut them out.

Now turn the Valentine's into scratch-off cards.  Mix together a bit of your acrylic paint and dishwashing soap.  Make it about two parts paint to one part soap.

Paint the mixture onto your card where you want the scratch-off part to be (on the heart if you used the printable option above).  A foam brush will give the best coverage and will only need one coat.  Do the same on all of the Valentine's then set aside until paint is completely dry.

If you are able to find them, try to pick up some little mailboxes to hold the 12-scratch-off Valentine's.  This time of year they are usually available in the dollar bins at Target.  Have your loved one scratch off their first ticket on Valentine's day, then a new one on the 14th of every month for the rest of the year.  Having a new activity to look forward to doing together will make this gift extra special for you and your family!
