The 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons' mandate to embrace gamers of all stripes is, by necessity, inclusive of previous campaign settings. And yet there hasn't been signs of any campaign support until the final playtest package. Will Dragonlance and Eberron be supported in 5th Edition?
I asked Mike Mearls this question in an interview, specifically about other settings Wizards considered in an open call that eventually led to Eberron:
Our focus is on the ruleset right now, but we want to make sure we have plans in place for fans of a variety of favorite settings. That probably means new settings, like the runners-up in the Eberron contest, will have to wait.
Ain't It Cool News confirmed the rumor:
A rumor has been going around that WotC is approaching the various creators of their most iconic game worlds to bring them back in some capacity as the worlds are re-created or re-imagined for the next edition of D&D. Ed Greenwood’s firmly on board, as he’s writing a monthly column on Forgotten Realms. In a Q&A on the #RPGnet IRC chatroom, Margaret Weis has stated she would be willing to work with Wizards of the Coast again (Kender are a subrace of Halfling that only exist in the Dragonlance world), while Keith Baker (creator of Eberron) has stated that he has been in talks with WotC but “they haven't decided what form setting support is going to take yet”.
Back at Gen Con 2013 I sat in on the Dungeons & Dragons R&D seminar, where the question came up about whether or not older campaign settings would be supported by 5th Edition. Judging by the response, it seems Eberron and Dragonlance will be making a reappearance:
There are hints in the play test packets with references to other settings. D&D Next is meant to embrace all settings. The next play test packet will feature warforged and kender, tiefling and dragonborn too!
