Will there be mail delivery and trash pickup on Memorial Day?

Every year we observe Memorial Day on the last Monday in May in honor of our nation's fallen soldiers. The holiday's roots go to the 1870s as a day to decorate the graves of those who died in the Civil War. Originally known as Decoration Day, cemeteries throughout the nation are abuzz with activity to honor not only fallen soldiers but also others have passed away by honoring them with flowers.

Memorial Day is observed by federal, state and local governments. As such, all government agencies will be closed and there will be no home delivery by the United States Postal Service. The lobbies of the Rochester and Rochester Hills post offices will remain open for those with post office boxes and to purchase stamps from the vending machines.

In Rochester Hills, like most Michigan communities, there will be no garbage collection. All trash pickup will be delayed by one day meaning that those regularly having trash picked up on Monday will see it happen on Tuesday and those having trash picked up on Fridays will be delayed until Saturday.

Memorial Day is also the official kickoff of summer and there are no reported retail or restaurant closings for the day.
