I suspect that we have all heard that, according to the Mayan calender the world will end. The theory is that the planets will all be aligned on one side of the Sun. An interesting discussion on "It's the Sun", involved the Wolfe Minimum in the early 1300's and similarities to the present. I questioned the person who presented this to determine if he had investigated the position of the Sun in the Epitrochoid shaped solar orbit and the alignment of the planets during these periods. The results turned out interesting. The first investigation was to determine of the planets were aligned in the years after 1300. Voila! There was a time around 1306 where the planets were aligned....sort of. I was excited and proceeded to 2012 to see if the stories are really true. Sad to say I could find no time in 2012 where this came even close. Isn't it amazing how these stories can propagate? You can check this out yourself by inputting various dates. It is actually a bit of fun. Check out the alignment of the planets on your birthday.
I checked the dates for the Maunder and Dalton minima's and found some crude alignment on the Dalton but nothing to speak of on the Maunder.
So unless someone knows of a better predictor than mine which shows alignment in 2012 I declare this myth busted. As common as this story is, it is amazing that it is phony. Then again I could be wrong. Does anyone out there have a different toy that would say something different?
One of the critiques over the global warming theory discussion is that the world will end in 2012 so there is no need to be concerned. Guess we better plan a little further ahead.

Fascinating! Now I can make plans for 2013.
