The photo of Will Smith and his family – kids Willow and Jaden – at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night wasn’t what the viral impression and apparent-story originally were, according to a Huffington Post report on Monday. Analysis of the situation shows that the photo of the Smiths which went crazy on the Internet was their reaction to Lady Gaga’s opening performance of “Applause” and not to Miley Cyrus’ twerking-and-grinding performance during her stage time.
While many have expressed disgust of Cyrus’ performance, especially when she was with Robin Thicke to “dance” along to “Blurred Lines,” the Smiths reportedly weren’t even shocked by Lady Gaga’s performance either. The cause of the confusion was allegedly the timing of the MTV audience cam’s replays – and when certain audience reactions were dropped into the show.
In fact, the freeze-frame of the Smiths is misleading, too, because – in the photo – Willow Smith’s apparent jaw-dropping reaction was simply her mouth open when she was chewing gum. On the far-right, it appeared to be a gasp, but it was only a nose scratch. Therefore, they weren’t truly looking disgustedly shocked at Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, or anyone else.
The MTV Video Music Awards were presented during an MTV-broadcast in Brooklyn on Sunday night. Despite Justin Timberlake owning the night by winning multiple awards, he has relinquished the following morning’s headlines to Miley Cyrus for her borderline-lewd performance. Critics are saying she went overboard in trying to show she’s no longer the Disney teen star of her “Hannah Montana” days – but now a grown Miley Cyrus.
