James Avery, who played the very famous Uncle Phil on “Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” passed away Dec. 31. Will Smith played his nephew on the show and nearly a week after Avery’s passing expressed his thoughts. Entertainment Weekly reported on Jan. 6 that Smith posted a Facebook status late Sunday night regarding Avery's passing.

Smith’s post stated that some of his greatest life lessons came from Avery. He said, “Every young man needs an Uncle Phil. Rest in Peace.” Smith posted a photo along with his thoughts that included several cast members from the show standing together. The caption noted that it was the last time they were all together.

Avery was remembered throughout the week by other celebrities as well. Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton on “Fresh Prince,” first tweeted of Avery’s passing and then Saturday expressed his feelings via Facebook as well. He posted a picture and said, “It is still hard to believe he is no longer with us.”

James Avery was respected by many and will be missed dearly by all.
