Dallas is the type of city where everything that is based here is best here and never has that statement been more true than when it comes to Joe Hoselton and his alter ego Jenna Skyy. Today, this dynamic duo was gracious enough to entertain some questions about their latest foray into auditioning for "RuPaul's Drag Race".
Hoselton may be the one with the legal photo identification when it comes time to board an airplane but Skyy is a true force to be reckoned with in her own right. This pair recently submitted an audition tape to "RuPaul's Drag Race" and friends and fans alike are hoping that this fourth submission will be the charm.
Joe's day job for the past decade has been as the Graduate Admissions Coordinator for the SMU Meadows School of the Arts; he is a featured performer at the Rose Room, winner of Miss Texas FFI and Miss Texas; and is the de facto leader of the all-volunteer group Something Fabulous which entertains sell-out crowds each month at Gay Bingo. Busy much? Well, try this on for size: he's also completing his studies to secure his Master's degree this spring from SMU.
So the next time you think you are juggling a busy schedule just click your heels together three times and ask yourself "WWJD?" (What Would Jenna Do?)
Now go pour yourself a stiff shot and enjoy the following Q&A with Joe Hoselton.
Q: If you secure a spot on "RuPaul's Drag Race", how would you envision using that opportunity to further your career?
A: I actually go back and forth with how far I want to take my career. I’m too safe when it comes to my finances and future and I worry that drag will never give me the security I want. RuPaul’s Drag Race would certainly give me a bump in exposure but it would likely come at a cost. I’m not ready to leave my day job and not sure if I ever will be. I’m blessed to have found a balance between my day and night professions and right now I’m managing to stay balanced. If Jenna were to become more of a national demand..that could compromise my future at SMU. However, knowing this going into it…might help me prepare for it should the opportunity present itself. I think I’d want to use this new ‘fame’ to further a cause than solely my career. Drag still commands any audience and I think it’s important that while you have their attention…that you have something to say…witty…and relevant. There’s a great deal of need in our community and I’d want to be a champion to help see those needs met. In the meantime, I’ll continue being a champion for the Dallas community when I can. I feel accomplished though to have the career I do and fortunate to have had the opportunities that helped shape the direction and momentum of my career.
Q: Between SMU, studies, Something Fabulous, Rose Room, and your personal life, how do you juggle all the activities? Any shortcuts you are willing to share?
A: Ah yes, the balancing act. I wish I had shortcuts…I tend to just compartmentalize my life and while that works for the most, I find myself overwhelmed occasionally. I do my best though to clock out and go home when I’m done with work but the more Jenna becomes a personality, the harder it is to separate. There are days when I feel like I’ve lost my identity and when you have a career that’s public then often people only see you for that. But I’m thankful to have a full and busy life…however lonely and isolating it may feel at times.
Q: "When" you are selected to appear on Drag Race, do you have any concerns about taking a leave of absence from SMU?
A: I love your optimism. It seems the longer that show is on…the LESS interested they’ve become in having me even as a candidate. Seasons 2 & 3 I got lots of love from the casting folks but the past few years it’s been luke warm. I don’t really have concerns though having been with SMU for 11 years now. Preparing for that kind of leave would be something I could anticipate and organize so that hopefully I could be gone with little concern…or notice…per the contacts I’d have to sign to be on the show ha ha.
Q: Aside from the RuPaul series, what other professional goals would Jenna like to achieve?
A: While competing is expensive and exhausting…I think I’d like an opportunity to hold a national title. I feel like RuPaul would be an easier gig to sustain though than a national title. I see my sisters on their national tours and the time it’d take me away from both my day job and shows I think would get the better of me. So before I puruse that, I have a few other items on my list I need to get in order.
Q: And as Joe, what goals would you personally like to achieve?
A: This coming May, I’ll be graduating with my Master’s in Music Education from SMU, so that’s one I can scratch off the list. I’ve got dreams to buy a house in the next few years, to invest in a business, to film a few sequels…I think ultimately though I want to achieve a sense of balance throughout my life. I want to feel good about the things I’m doing, where I’m at, and have the sense to know when to slow down, or kick things up…or hell…change directions altogether. I’ve worked hard to have a life that allows me not only options…but the ability to consider those options. I don’t ever want to feel cornered or stuck. So far, it’s working.
Q: Anything else you'd like to add?
A: Yes…come to Gaybingo Dallas!!! New things happening in 2013!!!
Will RuPaul be daring enough to extend an invite to Joe and Jenna? Stay tuned to find out.
