Will the record for the number of quarterbacks taken in the first round of the NFL Draft be broken at the 2014 NFL Draft? It's possible, but I think it's a real longshot.

Will record for quarterbacks taken in first round be broken at 2014 NFL Draft?

The record for the most quarterbacks ever taken in the first round of a NFL Draft is six, which occurred in the 1983 NFL Draft. The six quarterbacks taken in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft were John Elway (#1), Todd Blackledge (#7), Jim Kelly (#14), Tony Eason (#15), Ken O'Brien (#24), and Dan Marino (#27).

The 2014 NFL Draft could break the record for most quarterbacks taken in the first round for two reasons. One, there are a lot of talented quarterbacks in the 2014 NFL Draft, and two, there are a lot of NFL teams who need a franchise quarterback.

NFL teams in need of a franchise quarterback in 2014

There are six NFL teams that need a franchise quarterback right now. That includes the Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Minnesota Vikings.

There are two more NFL teams, the Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams, who also could possibly take a quarterback in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. That is eight potential teams who could possibly take a quarterback in the first round this year.

Plus, if Johnny Manziel drops to them, the rumors are pretty strong the Dallas Cowboys will draft him with the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Best quarterbacks in the 2014 NFL Draft

There are possibly seven quarterbacks who could be taken in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Here are the seven quarterbacks who could go in the first round this year.

  • Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville)

I'm a Rutgers college football fan, and I've seen more than enough of Teddy Bridgewater to think he is easily the most talented quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft. From what I saw, Teddy Bridgewater has a very accurate arm, he's got pocket mobility, and he is one tough player. The surest bet among the quarterbacks this year in my book, though, Bridgewater is dropping fast in most mock drafts.

Blake Bortles is a big quarterback who gets the job done. Is he a lock to become a franchise quarterback in the NFL? No, but he is the next best bet after Teddy Bridgewater.

  • Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M)

Can Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel become a franchise quarterback in the NFL? Yes, but he could also be a bust. Will he go in the first round? Probably, as one of the desperate teams will likely take Johnny Manziel in the first round, or the Dallas Cowboys will take him at 16.

  • Derek Carr (Fresno State)

There have been rumors that the Cleveland Browns like Derek Carr a lot more than they do Johnny Manziel. I watched Derek Carr in college a few times, and he looked great, but he played in a pass happy system so it's hard to say for sure he is a first round talent. He looked like one on the field to me.

  • Zach Mettenberger (LSU)

Having watched Zach Mettenberger play for LSU, I can say for sure he has a cannon for an arm. Certainly a NFL ready arm, but how about the rest of him?

  • Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois)

Former Colts and Bills GM Bill Polian said he believes quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from Eastern Illinois can go in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Tony Romo went to Eastern Illinois.

  • A.J. McCarron (Alabama)

Was Alabama successful because of A.J. McCarron, or was A.J. McCarron successful because of Alabama? Put me in the latter camp, but there is a small chance someone could take McCarron in the first round.

Record for most quarterbacks in first round of NFL Draft is unlikely to be broken this year?

While there are a lot of talented quarterbacks in the 2014 NFL Draft, most of the quarterbacks have too many question marks to think that seven will go in the first round, but it certainly could happen this year.
