Rachel Alexandra, the leading contender for 2009 Horse of the Year, may gallop into thoroughbred horse racing history books as the first three-year-old filly to win the historic Woodward Stakes. The $750,000 race will be held on Saturday, September 5th, at Saratoga Race Track in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Jockey Calvin Borel will ride Rachel Alexandra in the 2009 Woodward Stakes, taking off from post position three for the race on Saratoga’s mile-and-an-eighth dirt track, as trainer Steve Asmussen and owners Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick (of Stone Street Farms) watch. Post time is 5:52 p.m. (EDT) on Saturday, September 5th.
The other Woodward Stakes entries are all male horses, including Asiatic Boy, Bullsbay, Cool Coal Man, Da’ Tara, It’s a Bird, Macho Again and Past the Point. But all eyes may be on the young bay filly, who has captured the passion of thoroughbred racing fans in 2009.
Piloted by jockey Calvin Borel all season, Rachel Alexandra is undefeated, having won the Haskell International, Kentucky Oaks, Mother Goose and other high stakes races. Rachel Alexandra was the first filly to win the Preakness Stakes in 85 years.
“Rachel Alexandra is the best horse I ever rode, by far,” said jockey Calvin Borel. “She’s the best horse in the race.”
Bred by Dolphus C. Morrison and foaled in Kentucky on January 29, 2006, Rachel Alexandra is the offspring of Medaglia d'Oro and Lotta Kim.
