Miguel Cotto, who has lobbied in the past to fight Mayweather Jr., finally gets his chance to fight Floyd. on Saturday May 5th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many pundits feel that this will be a tough challenge for Floyd because of Cotto's in-ring skills and fighting style. Former multi-time champion Oscar De La Hoya is beating the drum on this matter. According to a Sunday February 19th report by ABS CBN News, De La Hoya made the following comments about Cotto vs. Mayweather:
"Cotto is patient and calculated with his punches and this new trainer he has will get him in great shape. Cotto has a very unique and interesting style to give mayweather some fits."
Many critics would have preferred to see Cotto in his prime against Mayweather Jr.. The same critics feel that Miguel is closer to the end of his career than his prime and believe that Mayweather Jr. should win via decision. However, like De La Hoya, there are still some supporters that believe Miguel has a legitimate chance to upset Floyd due to his style.
Miguel definitely has a puncher's chance to upset Floyd and is Mayweather's toughest opponent in the last few years, but the battles he's been in over his career have definitely taken a toll on his body and he's slowed down some. Floyd will be faster than Cotto and able to counterpunch his way to a points victory.
