In a press release on November 3, 2009 Murad, Inc. announced that it will partner with Massage Envy as Massage Envy attempts to remake itself into Massage Envy Spa. According to the press release Massage Envy "will begin converting many of its nearly 600 clinics and opening new clinics as Massage Envy Spas throughout the United States," while using the Murad, Inc. skincare line.
Massage Envy locations, however, are independently owned franchises and it is unclear if the franchisees support the investment necessary to add an esthetics program to their clinic. The significant cost involved in meeting local cosmetology codes, hiring estheticians, and supporting an inventory of products may be prohibitive to franchisees, many of whom struggle to make a profit in the current economy. The low cost clinic will face the additional challenge of keeping it’s facial prices in line with the price structure its clients have come to expect.
Despite these challenges, however, it looks like Massage Envy is continuing towards its goal of becoming the low cost day spa leader, in addition to the low cost massage leader. Local day spas will need to need to adapt and educate clients on the differences in their services and lines of products if they are to survive what may be a drastic change in pricing for facials.
