The most recent rumor involving the iPhone and the January 27th announcement is that Apple is set to announce a 'deal with the devil' by way of shoving aside Google in favor of Bing being the iPhone's default search engine.
But is this really going to happen?
The rumor is based on reports of talks between Apple and Microsoft, but going from talks to default search engine is quite a jump. After all, it makes since that the suits from Redmond simply want Bing to be included as a search engine choice. (Did you even know that you could change the iPhone default search engine?) After all, if Microsoft is going to take over Yahoo searches and compete against Google, it makes sense they'd want to be in the list of available search engines.
Could Apple be slapping Google in the face and going with Bing as the default? Certainly. But the real question is -- other than a fat wad of cash from Microsoft -- what would they gain? Let's face it, Bing as the default engine isn't a selling point -- unless you are selling a Droid or a Nexus One.
The media likes to play up some type of war between Apple and Google, but the truth is money forms the bottom line. And while Microsoft is clearly willing to open up their coffers to gain market share with Bing, is the pile of cash enough to persuade Apple to make a move that may cost it some iPhone sales?
Until I hear from the horse's mouth, I'm going to pass one this one.
