It was reported on Feb. 20, 2013 by the Associated Press Greek yogurt makers are looking to appeal to kids. Greek yogurts are now the “in food” for adults specifically women, and are taking over the diary aisle.
This could be because it’s lower in fat and high in protein than other yogurts. It could also be the sharpness in taste and thickness in consistency.
Now the makers of Greek yogurt are looking to appeal to the younger generation X and their parents as their new consumers.
General Mills is currently the main kids, yogurt producer so Chobani who happens to be the Greek yogurt lead producer is ready to start wooing kids with their Greek yogurt.
General Mills has the fun yogurt that’s inviting for kids from T.V. characters they like on boxes and prizes to win, not to mention the sugar they get from eating their yogurt.
We all know kids love sweet things, and really are not concerned with how good something is for them or the protein content. Although protein will keep kids fuller so they won’t snack as often.
Since 2007 Greek yogurt has grown from 1 percent to 36 percent of the yogurt market and is still growing, Chobani accounted for half of the 36 percent.
According to General Mills kids are 12 percent of the yogurt market. They too are attempting to win children over with a healthy yogurt so they created “Pro-Force” which is a Greek yogurt that comes in a cup and is being marketed to tweens and older kids.
However General Mills has not disclosed if they plan to make a Greek yogurt version of Yoplait Go-Gurt for younger children.
There is definitely a yogurt war going on with General Mills and Chobani for kids. Chobani is appealing to parents with “Chobani Champion Tubes” with flavors of “Chillin Cherry” and “Jammin Strawberry” similar to General Mills Yoplait Go-Gurt flavors.
Chobani is informing parents on Champion cups and tubes that they have less sugar and more protein then other kids yogurt. Chobani champion tubes have 8g of sugar and 5g protein and Yoplait Go-Gurt has 10 g of sugar and 2 grams of protein.
