Will "General Hospital" find new life on primetime television?

This fall, Katie Couric's self-titled talk show will complete the newly formed ABC Talktime, which could mean the end of General Hospital (GH).

However, an insider from ABC told TV Guide there's a chance that the sole ABC daytime soap could move to primetime as a limited-run summer series in the form of telenovelas, Spanish soap operas that has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

In December 2000, GH spin-off Port Charles (PC) became the first U.S. telenovela with Fate, the first of many "books" containing storylines lasting only 13 weeks, with each ending setting the stage for the next book.  It wasn't until Michael Easton's introduction as seductive vampire Caleb Morley in the third book Tainted Love that PC earned a devoted fan following as the new Dark Shadows, where Port Charles is not only taken over by the mob, but the town also became the battleground between good and evil.  This format continued until PC was canceled in the fall of 2003: ending with a cliff-hanger of newly married Alison (Erin Hershey Presley) becoming pregnant with Caleb's baby.

For now, GH strives to stay alive in the daytime genre with One Life to Live (OLTL) favorites Easton (John McBain), Roger Howarth (Todd Manning), Kassie DePaiva (Blair Cramer) and Kristen Alderson (Starr Manning) arriving in Port Charles sometime next month.
