Apparently, manufacturing is not dead in America.
Set within the city limits of the automobile capital of the world––Detroit, Michigan. Shinola has chosen the motor city to make luxury watches. A type of industry not seen in America for at least 40 years, Shinola has embarked on a journey to bring watchmaking back to US shores, and make Detroit the watch making capital of the world.
Tucked in the Midtown district of Detroit in the historic Argonaut building; Shinola occupies 30,000 square feet where they hand make each timepiece to exacting standards. There are 46 custom created pieces made in Switzerland but each watch is entirely assembled in Detroit.
Shinola named after the American shoe polish that was available in the mid 1950’s offers several high end products. In addition, to making luxury watches Shinola produces bicycles, journals and artisan leather bags
Each watch is individually numbered and has a signature case back plate that reads "Built in Detroit." The watch retails for $550.00 . Its first limited edition watch, the Runwell 47mm, offered in a limited edition of 1000, is already sold out.
The Runwell 40mm is still available and also retails online for $550.00. Each time piece comes with a two year international warranty. Online sales have already begun, with retail sales expected to begin sometime this summer.
