Will Christie's Career End After 'Bridgegate'?

Over the last few years, the name of New Jersey governor Chris Christie has been frequently tossed around as a presidential candidate for 2016.

During his career as Republican governor of the state, he has shown an ability work well with members of the Democratic party, and is admired by voters nationwide.

However, the opinions of many have shifted following the potentially damaging allegations that members of his staff were involved in the politically-motivated closing of several traffic lanes near the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, New Jersey last fall. The closings were apparently in retaliation for the mayor of Fort Lee not supporting Christie's re-election campaign.

The matter is now being investigated, and Christie has fired several members of his staff for sending e-mails to the Port Authority of New York, urging the closings of the lane. This puts not only his possible bid for presidency in jeopardy, but also puts his entire political career at risk.

So far, Christie has been performing damage control. He has fired the members of his staff who were apparently involved, and has even given a press conference expressing contrition, along with his outrage, at the situation.

So far, no evidence of wrongdoing has come up against the popular governor during the investigation, though if any evidence is found, the consequences could be dire. Some have said that, if evidence is found that he did lie, he could face impeachment.

While it is still too premature to speculate what this could do to Christie's career in the long-run- if in fact any evidence is found, this incident may have changed voter's opinions about Christie.

The lane closures last fall led to several days of gridlock and chaos, with commuters sitting in traffic for hours. The massive delays also resulted in several accidents. One elderly woman actually died of cardiac arrest while stuck in the traffic fiasco.Several lawsuits have resulted from the closures, as well.

What do you think of this incident? Do you think this will hurt Christie's chances at the presidency?
