Other than a few festivals here in the U.S. and Australia, as well 4 shows in Japan, there has been little activity from Van Halen this year. This was after an exciting 2012 that saw a new album and an extensive North American tour.
Back in September, David Lee Roth teased fans with the possibility of another new album. For some reason, this past week, an interview that the singer did with That Metal Show's Jim Florentine in August and which was released online on October 29 was suddenly picked up as new by a number of news sites. In the interview, Roth mentioned that the band had begun working on a new album and that fans could expect it in about 18 months.
Also last week, Wolfgang Van Halen told The Pulse of Radio that there is still much material for a new album in the Van Halen vaults. “There's plenty of other ideas lying around and some new stuff that we've been working on, too. You never know what'll happen,” the bassist said. Last year's A Different Kind Of Truth drew heavily from the band's early material that had never before made it past the demo stage.
Adding to the intrigue is an interview that classic rocker Rick Derringer did on Artie Lange's radio show on November 20, in which he said that Roth may be a featured performer in his upcoming tour during the summer of 2014. “One of the people we're talking about for the Bandanafest for next summer, we're trying hard to get him, is David Lee Roth. The Van Halen tour fell through for next summer,” he said. There has been no comment from Roth about this and there has been no news about any Van Halen tour plans for next summer. Also, the website for the Bandanafest is just a barebones template, containing no information.
Meanwhile, the Van Halen News Desk released their latest exclusive track from The Wild Life, a movie soundtrack written and played by Eddie Van Halen. “The director wanted a piece of music that would play in the background of a crazy, rowdy house party. THIS is what Eddie gave him.” You can listen to it here.
Also, Guitar Aficionado has released excerpts of their interview and photo session with Eddie, from the magazine's January/February 2014 issue.
