Wiley Women Fend off OLL to Capture Red River Title

Aliesha Carruthers and Chinwedu Mbah combined for 39 points to help 20th-ranked Wiley stop no. 21 Our Lady of the Lake, 83-73, in the championship game of the Red River Athletic Conference tournament in Waxahachie Monday.

Carruthers scored 21 points, including 14 in the first half, to pace the Lady Wildcats (28-3). Mbah, who had 10 of her 18 points in the first half, also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Kyniddia Purdy added 15 points and Kayla Brown scored 13 points.

Wiley now awaits the NAIA selection committee to see who it will face in the national tournament.

The Lady Saints (29-3), in a good position for an at-large bid, got a game-high 22 points from Nikkia Davis. Davis hit just four of 15 field goal attempts but made 14 of 19 free throws. Alisha Crump added 17 points, while Chelsea Solis put in 11 points in the loss. Treneshia Solomon led all players with 10 rebounds.

Wiley blasted Our Lady of the Lake on the floor, hitting 50.7 percent of its field goals, to just 31.7 percent for OLL.

However, the Lady Saints drove the lane and forced more fouls. They attempted 25 more free throws than the Lady Wildcats, making 28 total, 19 more than Wiley.
