Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation staffed entirely by volunteers and supported by private contributions through memberships and fund-raising events. There are no paid employees, no government funding. Their mission is to provide continuing care, life management and enrichment to exotic and wild animals in need of a home, and to provide educational opportunities to increase community awareness of the needs of these animals.
The facility is home to 51 animals including a Lion, 12 Tigers, 5 North American Black Bears, 5 Leopards (including 2 endangered Amurs), 2 Servals, 3 Lynx, 3 Cougars, 4 Brown Lemurs, a Coatimumdi, 9 Tropical Birds, a Timber Wolf and 3 wolf hybrids, a Bobcat and a Fennec Fox. One of the lynx is Iberian, the rarest cat in the world. With the exception of the bobcat, all of the animals were born in captivity and came from other sanctuaries. (The bobcat was found injured in a field and cannot be returned to the wild.)
The sanctuary needs 160 lbs of raw chicken/meat a day, 6 days a week. Tigers and bears may live up to 25 years in captivity. Their youngest tigers are 3 years old, so this commitment is substantial. Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary is located on 7 rural acres in Manatee County, renting with the option to buy.
Elmira’s is USDA certified, and operates under Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. They are open to the public for tours scheduled on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.
IF You go:
Wildstock will be held at Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary, located at 13910 Seminole Trail, Wimauma, FL 33598. The concert is scheduled to begin at 12:00pm. Admission to the concert is free. Tours of the Animal sanctuary will be offered for a $10.00 per person donation.
Wildstock is brought to you by KAM-BABS Promotions along with CJ of Higher Ground, and is sponsored in part by Elmira's Wildlife Sanctuary, Black Pearl Rock Radio, The St. Petersburg Live Music Bar Scene Examiner Column, KAM Music Publishing, Bay Area Band Source, and GR (Gypsi Rao) Photography.
