The 2013 Wild West Showdown kicked off Friday evening with a match-up between Tacoma's Dockyard Derby Dames and the Slaughter House Derby Girls out of Greely, Colorado.
Slaughterhouse started the bout off well, building an early 19-5 lead through the first five minutes or so thanks to smart jamming and solid defensive walls that held the DyDD jammers in check. However a couple quick power jams by the Wave of Mutilation catapulted Dockyard back into contention a few minutes later, pulling back to a one point deficit at 29-28. But a huge power jam run by Slaughter House jammer Evol Love gave her team a ton of momentum on their way to a 58-32 lead about halfway through the first half.
Dockyard had their power jam opportunities the rest of the first half. But they were often tossed out the window when their jammer would be waved off the track for a penalty of her own. The Dockyard defense also played better, but fell apart in the last few minutes of the half, allowing the Slaughter House jammers to pick up lot's of points in huge chunks. At halftime, Slaughter House led 106-63.
The ladies from Greely dominated the vast bulk of the second half. In each five minute chunk I scribbled the score down, they picked up at least 20 points during each of those periods. Meanwhile the Dockyard offense still couldn't kick it into gear thanks to more great pack work by the Slaughter House blockers. Dockyard did finally get their offense going and their defense working better over the last 15 minutes or so, outscoring their opponents 61-30 during that stretch. But it wasn't enough as Slaughter House packed a 201-143 victory into their suitcases for their trip home.
