Alexander Semin scored Carolina's sole goal in the second period on the power play following a slashing call on Heatly.
Both teams' starting goalies suffered injuries during the game. Coming off a 2-0 shutout of Nashville on Tuesday, Josh Harding left the game after stopping 20-of-21 shots through two periods of play. Niklas Backstrom relieved Harding for the third period and made seven saves. It was his first appearance since straining his knee against Nashville on October 8. The team expects to update Harding's condition after Friday's 11 a.m. practice.
"You can't pick and choose what time [you enter a game]. You have to be ready no matter what happens," Backstrom said during a post-game interview. "It's easy when you see the puck and you get to move around. Sitting a long time on bench, it's hard to get comfortable when you go out there. But the guys helped me out there and let me see a couple pucks."
Carolina goalie Cam Ward stopped all five shots he faced before suffering a lower-body injury early in the first period. Justin Peters saved 19-of-21shots after relieving Ward.
Next up, an away and home series against Chicago. The Wild face the Blackhawks at United Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. and return to St. Paul on Monday for a 7 p.m. game at the Xcel Energy Center.
