Bureau of Land Management's Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will be meeting to discuss issues regarding the management, protection, and control of wild horses and Burros on Western public rangelands on Monday, December 7,  in Reno, Nevada.  The Board advises the Secretary of Interior, Director of BLM, Secretary of Agriculture, and Chief of the Forest Service on matters regarding the management of wild horses and burros on public lands.

A notice published in the Federal Register, November 10, 2009, states,        " The BLM invites written comments from all interested parties."  Oral statements are anticipated to be accepted at 3 p.m. on meeting day.  Guidelines for public comment procedures welcome the public to participate by speaking at the meeting or by the submission of written comments either by mail or electronic format ( e-mail).

Animal rights and wild horse advocate organizations announced last week they had united in their efforts to stop the escalated removal of wild horses and burros from public lands by delivering a petition to President Obama, members of Congress, and Department of the Interior to request an immediate moratorium on all roundups.  Signatures include over 130 organizations, scientists, individuals and celebrities.  The week also brought  news of over 7,000 public comments to the BLM regarding the scheduled removal of 2,500 wild horses from the Calico Complex in Northern Nevada.

Will the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board receive a similar response?  Only time will tell.

The BLM notes that, " Your written comments should be specific ans explain the reason for any recommendation."  Their Public Comment Procedures go on to say, "The BLM appreciates any and all comments, but those most useful and likely to influence decisions on management and protection of wild horses and burros are those that are either supported by quantitative information or studies or those that include citations to and analysis of applicable laws and regulations."

Please stop the round up of our Mustangs now! The idea of rounding them up and sticking them in holding pens is ludicrous. You know the next complaint will be: "It's too costly to feed them." There is plenty of land for the cattle industry to run their cattle and let the horses run free. Don't let a National Heritage die. Nevada needs the tourism the wild horses bring. Whenever people find out I live in Nevada, they always ask if I see wild horses where I live. And I have to tell them: "Not anymore!"

    Hey Carrol:

Thank you for spreading the news and encouraging people to get involved. I am so glad to see your picture! Great to put a face to the gal on the phone. I will be attending the meeting on Dec. 7th. Hope you will be there too. Looking forward to meeting a fellow horsewoman with such fire to save the Mustangs. I also want to hear what else you are working on behind the scenes.

    Morgan
