Wild driver plows over small dog on Super Bowl Sunday

Chicago, IL - Super Bowl Sunday left many people cheering, others in tears and one little dog fighting for her life.

Shortly after the game ended, Scarlett's owner took her out for a walk.

Just after leaving their yard, a car screamed through an alleyway and struck little Scarlett - completely smashing the rear portion of her little body.

This was not a case of a roaming dog who strayed onto a roadway - the dog was leashed. In this tragic situation, it was an irresponsible driver who was not paying attention.

The man driving the vehicle saw what happened, stopped briefly and then sped away - leaving the suffering dog lying in the road with her distraught guardian.

Scarlett, though battered and broken, survived - but piecing her body back together has come at a significant price.

Donna Graham, President of Orphaned Paws Rescue, is assisting Scarlett's owner, Miranda Starks, with the massive veterinary expenses (already at $7000 and steadily climbing).

Though responsible owners expect to take on certain expenses, there is no way to prepare for an accident that runs upwards of $10,000.

But Starks is hoping and praying that enough money can be raised to help put Scarlett back together - at least enough for her to be able to enjoy life once again.

From Graham on Scarlett's extensive injuries:

Her back half is what got run over and she has a shattered pelvis, broken rib, potential hernia (too much bruising and swelling right now to tell) and her back left leg is shattered.  She has had surgery to repair what could be repaired but doctor's are not sure if she'll walk again and/or have a potential leg amputation.  Her leg is held together by a bunch of plates and pins.  Her owner is only in her 0s and the bills are already at $7,000 and likely to go to $10,000 by the time they are done.  The good news is Scarlett has been released to home care but now needs to stay as immobile as possible to try and get that leg to heal.

Scarlett's story has been added to the Orphaned Paws Rescue "Pet Projects" page with the hopes that funds can be raised for little Scarlett.

Donations can be made directly at the Orphaned Paws Pet Project web page, or to the veterinary clinic which is providing treatment to Scarlett:

Animal Emergency and Treatment Center of Chicago

Direct payment to Scarlett Starks' account

As for the person responsible for this horrible situation - a police report has been filed, but cameras in the area which should have captured the car make/model and license plate number, were not working.

Get well soon Scarlett. May Karma catch up with the person who did this to you.
