The Alamo Drafthouse Ritz will screen David Lynch's wily adaptation of Barry Gifford's pulp novel, Wild at Heart, Saturday at 11:45 pm and Sunday at 9:15 pm.
Hot off of his success with the instant classic Blue Velvet, surrealist auteur Lynch took audiences on another experimental adventure in shifting tones with the 1990 road movie that earned him the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Nicolas Cage's loose and unhinged acting style (continuing where Raising Arizona left off and well before the paycheck days of National Treasure) lends itself to the role of Sailor Ripley, a drifter fresh out of prison who hightails it to California with girlfriend Lula (Laura Dern). On their trail is a killer hired by Lula's spiteful mother (Diane Ladd).
Though sporting a linear narrative and more intentional comedy than usual, in grand Lynch fashion, the film is an unpredictable journey into the dark heart of America and Americana, boasting an impressive supporting cast, including Willem Dafoe, Harry Dean Stanton, and Crispin Glover. It’s a killer romance for star crossed lovers and Elvis fanatics alike.
