Wilcox leads Gopher hockey team to victory agains mascotless UND team (Photos)

The University of Minnesota Golden Gopher hockey team welcomed the mascot less University of North Dakota hockey team to Mariucci Arena on January 18 and 19, 2013. The series would be the final time the two teams would meet for the next few years. The Gophers came away with a 5-1 victory and move into first place in the WCHA standings. The teams will face off again Saturday January 19 in a Hockey Day in Minnesota matchup that will bring down the house.

The rink was rocking in anticipation of this series and the game did not disappoint. The teams skated to a 0-0 draw after the first period with plenty of action and speed being shown off. There were several skirmishes after aggressive drives to the net but no one could score.

The North Dakota offense caught a lucky break in the second period to start off scoring. Minnesota Goalie Adam Wilcox was lights out from that point on putting on a goalie show butterflying from one end of the net to the other and snatching pucks from midair after they were redirected at the net.

The Gophers scored five unanswered points, skating to victory in game one of the two day series that was featured as part of Hockey Day in Minnesota.
