The renowned Wilberforce University Choir is scheduled to perform at holiday party hosted by President and First Lady Obama on Thursday, December 15, 2011. Wilberforce University is the nation's oldest, private historically black university.
Under the direction of Jeremy Winston, the choir will perform a variety of music for the holiday season. The Phliladelphia native holds the Ray Charles Distinguished Chair of Sacred and Choral Music at Wilberforce. Winston has been credited with extending the national recognition of the university choirs.
Although the choir has numerous performances slated for several churches and schools in New York, Philadelphia and the Metro Washington, D. C. area, the performance at The White House is considered the hightlight of the season.
The choir was recently featured on the motion picture soundtrack for the film, "Amazing Grace." WATCH AN EXCERPT HERE
According to Winston, the Choir regularly tours schools and churches to perform and recruit new members. Jeremy Winston's early interest in music was piqued as a Suzuki violin student and through his years as a student at the Pine Forge Academy. Graduating from Oakwood College (now University) under the tutelage of Dr. Lloyd Mallory, he then continued his studies at Morgan State University with the late Dr. Nathan Carter.
Prior to The White House performance, the choir will present a Christmas Concert at the Ebenezer A.M. E. Church tonight.
