Frisbee Dog in Wii Sports Resort
It’s the end of July and Wii Sports Resort has finally come out. This sequel to Wii Sports follows in the footsteps of its older brother by representing real life activities, such as canoeing and archery, in a casual sense that allows everyone, whether it be your grandpa or your younger cousin, to get in on the fun. The difference this time around is the inclusion of the Wii Motion Plus, which creates a closer 1:1 experience with the Wiimote. To give my readers a better idea of what to expect from each activity found in Wii Sports Resort, I will be discussing the pros and cons of the activities over the next week and a half. With each update I will talk about 2 of the 12 activities for a total of 6 different updates.
Today I will cover Frisbee and Golf
Frisbee
Frisbee consists of two modes; Frisbee Dog and Frisbee Golf. To control the Frisbee in both modes is as easy as holding the Wiimote in your hand and doing a throwing motion as if you were playing an actual game of Frisbee. Once you’re ready to throw, press and hold the B-button on the Wiimote. Release the B-button mid-throw to release the Frisbee and send it flying. The setup is very similar to real life and does a good job of picking up whether you release the Frisbee too early, too late or just right. Angling the Frisbee up or down is also possible by tilting the Wiimote towards the ceiling or floor respectively and will change the course of your Frisbee’s flight.
In Frisbee Dog it’s your job to successfully throw 10 Frisbees towards the center of a target (marked by an arrow pointing down) and have your canine companion (automatically) catch each Frisbee to earn points. Each target contains three sections. The outer ring nets you 10 points, the middle 50 points and the center 100 points. The first five throws only has you concerned with throwing each Frisbee towards the center of the targets, while the last five throws add balloons into the mix and gives you the opportunity to add more points to your score, that is if you manage to hit one while aiming for a target. Compete with up to three other players to see who can get the most points by working with their dog cooperatively.
Frisbee Golf is an interesting activity as it combines two of Wii Sports Resorts’ activities into one game. The object, as you might have guessed it, is to finish each hole with the fewest number of throws. Start off each throw by choosing one of three different colored Frisbees (Brown- long distance, Blue- medium distance, and Yellow- short distance) and then throw your Frisbee trying to avoid sand traps and water hazards. Frisbee Golf in a way is a lot simpler than its big brother since you only have to get your Frisbee to go over a circle of light and not directly in each hole. The second you touch any area of the light your Frisbee will instantly be sunk and you’ll move onto the next course.
My Impression of Frisbee
Throwing a Frisbee in Wii Sports Resort is definitely a lot more fun than playing with your boring old Frisbee outside. Throwing the Frisbee work near flawlessly and each disc thrown flies like an actual Frisbee would. This attention to detail paid by Nintendo is noteworthy and definitely makes the experience feel as close the real thing as possible. Both of the activities in Frisbee, Frisbee Dog and Frisbee Golf, can be turned into carefree contests in which the players involved are having fun even if they are behind in points. Frisbee is one of the select activities in Wii Sports Resort that you will be spending a lot of time with.
Golf
Golf in Wii Sports Resort is almost exactly the same as it was in Wii Sports. The controls are nearly identical with the exception of a new tilt mechanic that picks up the slightest angling of your Wiimote based on how you hold it, which allows you to implement draw and fade into each of your shots. For those unfamiliar with golf terms draw means to cause the ball to move more to the left in the air and fade means the ball will move more to the right. Applying draw or fade is as simple as tilting the remote more towards you or away from you. The goal of golf is simple; hit your ball through each of the 18 courses offered taking into account the wind, water hazards and sand traps. Finish each hole in the fewest amount of strokes and aim for a new record. The 18 courses in Golf consist of nine brand new courses and the nine courses that were offered in the original Wii Sports.
My Impression of Golf
Golf is just as fun as it was in Wii Sports if not slightly better. It’s still extremely satisfying to sink a well-planned putt or get a chip shot to hit into the flag of a course. The increased accuracy of the MotionPlus controls makes Golf feel more life-like and as a result this version of Golf is much more difficult than it was in Wii Sports three years ago. The slightest angle applied as you swing the Wiimote can cause you to hit the ball in an unwanted direction and may cause you to mess up a few shots. With patience and a little practice you’ll learn how to shoot straight shots and also be able to angle them when you want to. Even if you aren’t hitting under par on each course (which is 99% likely on your first few times playing) Golf is a fun, relaxing alternative to the other activities of Wii Sports Resort that require a lot more movement and energy to be successful in.
Final Thoughts on Wii Sports Resort
Wii Sports Resort is an impressive package that offers 12 different activities as well as a single Wii MotionPlus accessory with each copy. The majority of these activities are fun in their own way, but certain sports will stand out over others. Archery, Swordplay, Cycling, Frisbee and Bowling were among my favorite activities while the other ones didn’t fair so well. In the end having at least 5 activities to go back to every so often is worth the $30 price tag of the game (the other $20 for the MotionPlus accessory) and I couldn’t recommend Wii Sports Resort enough for every Wii owner especially since the MotionPlus is going to be used for most future Wii games.
My Score: 8/10
This concludes my series on Wii Sports Resort.
