Wickenheiser to be Canadian flag bearer at Sochi Opening Ceremonies

According to the Canadian Press on Thursday, women's hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan will carry the flag for Canada in the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

This will be Wickenheiser's fifth Olympic Winter Games for Canada. She won a gold medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. She also won a silver medal at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano.

Wickenheiser becomes the second women's hockey player to carry the flag for Canada in the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Winter Games. At the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Danielle Goyette of St-Nazaire, Quebec carried the flag. Goyette will be the assistant coach for Team Canada at the Olympic Winter Games next month.

Wickenheiser could be considered the greatest women's hockey player of all-time. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, she is the all-time leader in goals (16), assists (30) and points (46) at an Olympic Winter Games.
