One of Altadena’s treasures is Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum. Headstones mark the graves of Civil War veterans and local millionaires. There are towering angels, watching over loved ones as they melt into eternity, and simple blocks with a name and date. The mausoleum is as imposing as a gothic cathedral, full of stained glass, marble, and tile.
It is the perfect stage and the perfect season for the horror story adaptation series “Wicked Lit” put on by Unbound Productions. Wicked Lit audiences experience three short plays as they are led through the grounds of the mausoleum and cemetery by a Story Guide. There are two very scary presentations, each consisting of three short stories.
Production A is a remount of the plays performed last year: The Chimes by Charles Dickens; The Unnamable by H.P. Lovecraft; and The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe. Performance dates are Oct. 21-23, 27-31, and Nov. 2- 5, 2011. All performances begin promptly at 8 p.m.
Production B presents three short plays that are new to Mountain View: The Body Snatcher by Robert Louis Stevenson; Casting the Runes by M.R. James; and A Ghost Story by Mark Twain. Performance dates are Oct. 27-31 and Nov. 2-5, 2011. All performances begin promptly at 8 p.m.
Tickets are sold separately for each production series and range from $39 to $60 each. For more information, go to the website at www.wickedlit.org or call (818) 242-7910.
This is a walking show – patrons must be able to comfortably walk a minimum of 1,000 paces and climb stairs in order to experience these productions. Some scenes will be outside, and Altadena nights are chilly, so dress accordingly.
Mountain View Mausoleum is located at 2300 N. Marengo Ave., Altadena. There is plenty of free parking on the grounds. Patrons are instructed not to enter the cemetery portion of the grounds from Fair Oaks Ave., as it is easy to get lost.
Unbound Productions Co-Artistic Directors Jonathan Josephson, Paul Millet, and Jeff G. Rack wrote and will direct all six adaptations.
The mission of Unbound Productions, the theatre company that produces Wicked Lit as well as the newly-launched History Lit is to create new theatrical adaptations of classic literature and produce them in non-traditional venues.
