Kansas.com reports that police arrested 58-year-old Terry Lee Loewen, and have charged him with trying to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempting to damage property, and with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Authorities say Loewen was taken into custody at 5:40 a.m. Friday morning after trying to enter the airport with what they believe to be a vehicle loaded with explosives. Reports indicate that Loewen planned to trigger the explosives himself and to die in the explosion.
Papers filled in the criminal complaint against Loewen say he reportedly spent time studying the airport and even taking photos of access points and noting the flight schedule.
Officials stress that there wasn't a breach in the security at the Mid-Continent Airport, and that the travelers in the airport and the members of the public were never in “placed in jeopardy.”
