Wichita Falls native Gage Green helps Oklahoma State to playoff victory

Wichita Falls, Texas native Gage Green scored the go-ahead run to help Oklahoma State defeat Cal State Fullerton Sunday in the NCAA baseball playoffs in Stillwater, according to an article today (Monday) in the Wichita Falls Times Record News newspaper. Green led the Wichita Falls Rider High School Raiders to a Texas state high school baseball championship in 2011.

Green played a major role in the Cowboys 6-4 win against Cal State Fullerton as he collected three hits in addition to scoring the run which gave OSU the lead for good in the seventh inning. Teammate Tim Arakawa drove Green across the plate with a basehit.

Green is probably the most versatile player on the OSU team as he has played catcher, left field and center field during his junior season. In 2013 he led the team in steals and batting average.

Teammate Zach Fish said, "He's that guy on your team that everybody needs. He's a fantastic ballplayer. He's an amazing athlete, to be able to catch, play center field, steal bases hit home runs, hit balls in the gap...he's just so versatile to us."

OSU coach Josh Holliday touts Green as "the heartbeat of our lineup," according to an article in NewsOK.

Green has stolen 18 bases in 20 attempts and leads the team with a .321 hitting average. He's also tied with Fish for the team lead with 23 multi-hit games. He's second in runs and sacrifice bunts. A fulltime catcher on Rider's state championship team, he was recruited by former OSU coach Frank Anderson as an outfielder.

He's proven he can do everything except sell hot dogs at a baseball stadium.

In addition to the coaches at OSU, he has another great mentor....his dad. His father Scot Green was his coach at Rider when the team won the school's first state championship in baseball. The coach retired so he could watch his son play baseball in college and his daughter Jordan play volleyball at Rider where she was all-district.

His dad said at the Big 12 tournament in Bricktown during a recent interview he was proud of his son and daughter. He also credited the OSU coaches with teaching the players about life as well as baseball.

The victory earned the Cowboys the championship of the regional at Stillwater and qualifies them to advance to the Super Regional round. The OSU team's chances for a national championship are enhanced with Team Green helping out.
